Instagram Adds Competitor Insights for Professional Accounts
Instagram’s Professional Dashboard now includes a new “Competitive Insights” section, which provides another opportunity to contextualise and monitor your account’s performance.

As you can see in these images, shared by digital marketing advisor, if you have a business or creator account, Instagram’s new Competitive Insights option is now being rolled out within your “Professional Dashboard” options.
You may compare your performance to up to ten accounts, each with side-by-side data on relative follower growth and publishing frequency (including Reels, feed posts, advertisements, and more).
The comparison here is fairly binary, as it only provides some basic numbers to measure, such as posting volume to follower response. And, while it does allow you to see some of your competitors’ individual post performance data (even, interestingly, if the account hides its like counts), it does not provide in-depth breakdowns of their cumulative performance metrics, so you can’t see, say, graphs that compare your performance on each metric to the other account, and the comparisons are also one-on-one, side-by-side, rather than grouped.
So it’s probably interesting, but maybe not hugely valuable, depending on your focus and purpose in the app.
Because, in reality, followers gained are probably not the best comparing indicator, since you truly want clicks and to learn how to drive direct connections from your updates. If statistics on clicks generated were given here, it would be useful because you could then look at what each account was publishing to assist drive that response.
This type of comparison may help you contextualise where you are in terms of audience growth, allowing you to illustrate your progress to others. However, the focus of social media analytics is shifting over time, as fewer people follow accounts (due to personalised algorithms giving them what they want to see based on their activity), and views and shares become the primary metrics for driving response.
Once again, these statistics are not included in this comparison. Without them, it’s just something, but it’s also nothing.
The three areas you should focus to maximize your social media marketing opportunities on are:
- Awareness – Follower growth, engagement, shares, saves, views
- Nurturing – Views, Likes, replies, clicks, saves
- Conversion – Clicks, shares-to-clicks (when trackable)
Some of these factors overlap, but fundamentally, what I’m saying is that comparing posting volume to follower increase does not tell you anything about how well your strategy is doing.
You need more than this, albeit this could be only the beginning, and IG will ultimately offer more comparing features. However, individual data points do not tell the complete story and, due to changing patterns, are probably not worth much.
