Bing Recommends lastmod Tags For AI Search Indexing

Bing advises using precise lastmod values in sitemaps to assist AI-powered search in determining which pages to recrawl and index.

Bing has changed its sitemap guidelines, emphasizing the lastmod tag’s function in AI-powered search to decide whether sites need to be recrawled.

While real-time solutions such as IndexNow provide speedier updates, Bing claims that correct lastmod values help maintain material discoverable, particularly on frequently updated or large-scale websites.

Bing Prioritizes lastmod for Recrawling

According to Bing, the lastmod field in your sitemap is a major signal for AI-driven indexing.  It aids in determining if a page has to be recrawled or can be avoided.

To ensure that it works properly, use ISO 8601 format with both date and time (for example, 2004-10-01T18:23:17+00:00).  That level of precision enables Bing to prioritise crawl operations based on actual content changes. Setting lastmod to the time your sitemap was built is not recommended unless the page has been modified.

Bing has confirmed that the changefreq and priority tags are no longer used in crawling or ranking.

Submission & Verification Tips

Bing recommends submitting your sitemap in one of two ways:

  • Reference it in your robots.txt file
  • Submit it via Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Once submitted, Bing fetches the sitemap immediately and rechecks it daily.

You can verify whether it’s working by checking the submission status, last read date, and any processing errors in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Combine With IndexNow For Better Coverage

To maximise the likelihood of timely indexing, Bing recommends integrating sitemaps with IndexNow. While sitemaps provide Bing with a complete picture of your website, IndexNow enables for real-time URL-level updates which is essential when content changes often.

Sitemaps at Massive Scale

If you manage a large website, Bing’s sitemap capacity limits are worth your attention:

Up to 50,000 URLs per sitemap

50,000 sitemaps per index file

2.5 billion URLs per index

Multiple index files support indexing up to 2.5 trillion URLs

That makes the standard sitemap protocol scalable enough even for enterprise-level ecommerce or publishing platforms.

Why This Matters

Accurate crawl signals are becoming important as search becomes more AI-driven.

Bing’s reliance on sitemaps, particularly the lastmod field, demonstrates that basic technical SEO techniques remain relevant, even as AI reshapes how information is surfaced.

For huge sites, Bing’s capabilities for trillions of URLs provide scalability.  For everyone else, the message is simple: maintain your sitemaps clean, correct, and up to date in real time.  This maximizes your content’s visibility in AI search.
